Summary of UX Case Study and Methodology

Step 1. Participant Observation

Our research team conducted and created a report on details we observed of participants in their environment the product would be used in. This turned out to be very useful further on during our design section because of how user specific and unique the full-stack space was; along with how unique students were themselves. This gave us a much better scope and understanding to design for when moving forward.

Step 2. Heuristic Analysis and Report

After participant observation, a heuristics analysis was done on the current product being used, in this case the “Contigo” water bottle. After evaluating the product, we found 4 catastrophic and major violations which we deemed it to be necessary to carry out a redesign.

Step 3. Design Concept boards

Three design concept boards were created to synthesis what the best course of action would be to move forward. After reviewing the proposals, the “USB Business Card” was chosen to move forward.

Step 4. Prototype Design Concept

In order to create a functional low fidelity prototype, we utilized Leonardos basement. Since the timeline for deliverables was so short, it was determined we could only spend 4 hours in the building process. It was very critical in this period to make sure to add functionality of key elements that we would be able to test with users.

Step 5. Evaluation of Concept

Research was then conducted on 3 user participants to test the prototype. Although the prototype was very partial in some of the lesser used aspects, we were able to study in great detail on features users liked, disliked and possible ideas to incorporate when next building a higher fidelity prototype. One interesting quote from a user brought up the aspect of security, asking “What if it gets lost? That’s not something I want someone random to have”. Further analysis will be conducted in order to address that concern.

Step 6. 5 Minute Client Presentation

A stakeholder meeting took place where the final deliverable of this work was presented. Stakeholders were receptive to going into a next phase of a redesign and study to better meet the goals of the product.

Step 7. Further Redesign

A scope of further study was put in place to determine what areas and details need to be ironed out.

The key aspects we will be evaluating are:

• Adding in key fob application and researching feasibility

• Addressing security aspect to research

• Study of functionality USB design in real-life scenarios
